Some reasons to call an IBCLC may be:

  • A sleepy baby who won’t wake up to feed
  • Cracked, sore or damaged nipples
  • Painful latching or refusal to latch
  • Low weight gain in your infan
  • Painful breasts
  • Low milk production

Why Breast/chest Feed?

Human milk reduces the risk of many ailments for both mom and baby. The World Health Organization recommends exclusively feeding infant human milk (while adding in solid foods around 4-6 months) until about 2 years of life for the best possible start.

Human milk fed babies have fewer ear infections, colds, diarrhea, reflux, lower rates of diabetes, obesity, some types of cancer, better dental health, and even a lower risk of SIDS to name a few.

Parents who lactate or breast/chest feed have lower rates of heart disease, osteoporosis, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, depression and they even get more sleep!

My Qualifications and Philosophy

I have developed a strong understanding of successful lactation and nursing a baby through a combination of professional development and personal experience. My clinical experience first began as a social worker and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for at-risk families in rural Arizona. This soon sparked an interest in the field of lactation as I watched parents struggle to breast/chest feed due to a lack of professional support.

So in 2010 I became an IBCLC started at the Flagstaff Medical Center and also opened my private practice. I then was the IBCLC for the Flagstaff Birth and Women’s Center for 4 years. I now run a non-profit Lactation Center in the Flagstaff area as well as my private practice in the Verde Valley and Prescott areas. Over the last 12 years it has been my joy to assist 1,000’s of families in their lactation journey!

As a mother of 3 children, I have experienced the many joys and benefits of nursing. I have also experienced many of the real life challenges like sleep deprivation, breast infections, breastfeeding a NICU baby, postpartum depression and pumping and working to name a few.

I believe that breast/chest feeding is the biological norm and that babies and birthing or lactating parents are capable of amazing things! My professional passion lies in helping families achieve their lactation goals with competent, evidence-based, compassionate and experienced support.

It’s my honor and pleasure to be part of lives of the families I serve. I see breast/chest feeding as a means to a healthier, happier world!

"Maya was such an amazing resource when trying to figure out how to breastfeed my cleft-affected baby. Using a gentle approach, she always answered any questions or concerns I had. I couldn't have made it this far in my breastfeeding journey without her. I would recommend Maya to anyone."- Rachel Morgan

"Maya is very professional but makes you feel like a close friend. She does all of the research & stands by whatever decision you decide to make. She is nonjudgmental & is super supportive! She is great at making you feel like you are not alone & helping you through the stressful & often difficult journey that beginning breastfeeding is. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone. Without her advice & help I probably would've stopped exclusively breastfeeding during the first month but because of Maya I've made it 6 months & am looking forward to the rest of the year!" - Jacque Muehlbauer

"Maya was so helpful in getting me to be patient and confident with breastfeeding. I could always call her anytime I had questions. She was also quick to come for a home visit if I needed it and she was very encouraging when I felt it was too hard. If it wasn't for her help through my mastitis I would have probably quit breastfeeding. She definitely is the BEST!!!" - Erin Adams
